A fantastic icefall only during mid-winter
The Hossawa-no-taki Falls is the only waterfall in Tokyo that has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Waterfalls. This waterfall is located near the headwaters of the Akigawa River and consists of 4 levels with a height difference of 60 meters. Of the four tiers, the one you can see by walking on the promenade is the lowest one with a drop of about 23.3 meters. The fresh water here, which is also used as drinking water for the neighborhood, glistens in the sunbeams filtering through the trees as it pours into the plunge pool below the falls.
The Hossawa-no-taki Falls is also famous for freezing over in the winter, and from December to February, an “Icefall Quiz” is held as an event during the “Hossawa-no-taki Falls Winter Festival” to guess the day when the falls will freeze over the most (icing day), and a photo contest is held to compete in photographic skills with Hossawa-no-taki Falls as the subject.
