Politician’s residence registered as a national registered tangible cultural property

The Tsukumo Residence was built between 1931 and 1940 by Kunitoshi Tsukumo, a politician from Ome City. The building was constructed by inviting shrine carpenters from Kyoto in collaboration with carpenters, stonemasons, tatami workers, and others from Ome City. Kunitoshi Tsukumo was involved in national politics as a member of the House of Representatives from the early Showa period to the postwar period, and the house was visited by many government officials and celebrities of the past.

Currently, the museum is open as a historical museum. It exhibits letters, paintings, and related historical documents of historical figures such as Sakamoto Ryoma and Kondo Isamu, and holds special exhibitions on an irregular basis. In March 2020, it was designated as national registered tangible cultural property (building).

In the “Susutake-no-Ma” tea house, coffee, powdered green tea, and homemade cakes are served on tea utensils, coffee cups, glasses, and maki-e trays that have been handed down in the Tsukumo family. Why not take a look at the designs scattered throughout and consider the craftsmen’s persistence at that time?
